Digital Matte Painting

A collection of the digital matte paintings I've created over the last few years using both 2d and 3d techniques in Photoshop and Maya.

The Borgias: Matte Painting I completed using basic 3d geometry provided. Created a paint-over, added 'painted in' additional background towers, greenery/trees/shrubs, repair of location rooftops, and 'painted' Italian countryside background.

Xmen Origins: Wolverine: remodelled geometry of THREE MILE ISLAND digital asset in Maya. Had to simplify geometry to speed up render times. I set up multiple camera projections with matte painted elements including all lighting and detail.

Footage was shot at strip mall location. I 'painted' smoke damage on facade and roof, and created a matte painting of a destroyed-looking interior - damaged furniture, and damaged window glass of the cafe store-front.

Using water from a previous plate, I created a matte painting of the Cliffs of Dover, and a sky replacement with isolated cloud elements, which compositing would animate for the final shot

Digital matte painting augmentation of the Ireland shooting location. As its meant to be a Norwegian location, I created a forest extension and provided larger hills, mountains.

As the production was filmed in Ireland, I had to augment the landscape and add Norwegian mountains with isolated cloud layers.

Final scene in the episode, required Ragnar to be sitting on Pulpit Rock in Norway, shot in studio - I provided matte painted rocky terrain and background rock cliff-face.

For Moonhaven, I created matte paintings of a terra-formed moon, with a large crater, background mountains, and trees. Painted out crew vehicles, blue-screens, and on-set construction.
